The biggest question for every starting Virtual Assistant is: HOW DO I EVEN GET STARTED?
I’m here to answer all the questions you may have: the fun, hard, creative, and exciting. I’m going to touch on all of it!
Lost in the Job World
After graduating college, I was a first grade teacher, day camp director, and marketing specialist. All of this to say: I wasn’t THRIVING in a space of creativity that I craved. I was in a horrible job at the time, full of anxiety and frustration with where I ended up. I was ready to do anything I possibly could to get out. And so we begin in the early summer of 2022.
Taking the Jump
One day, I just couldn’t take it anymore, so I texted my photographer friend and simply asked:
“So, is it a thing to run social media for photographers?”
I had no idea that the quick text I sent to my good friend would start the best business journey of my life! My friend replied, letting me know that she was in the middle of finding someone to hire for socials (like, how crazy, right?!) and that she would hire me that second if I was serious about it. I spent the next 12 hours researching, calculating, and learning about what this “VIRTUAL ASSISTANT” job really was. After staying up all night, I decided to go for it, full well knowing that it might not work, but LET ME TELL YOU, I was so determined, excited, and motivated to succeed.
Full-Time in THREE WEEKS
After three weeks of juggling my day job and working all night on creating my new business and building up my client numbers, I quit my job. Let me say that again: AFTER THREE WEEKS, I QUIT MY JOB. As I type these words, it’s still hard for me to believe that I actually did this. Over a year later, it’s still crazy to wrap my head around how I made this happen.
If you’re wondering how I did it, read about “HOW TO BECOME A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT: PART ONE.” This explains the tools, mindset, and platforms I used to begin my journey. Beyond the logistics, it took SO MUCH hard work, exhaustion, and days I thought I should give up before I finally felt successful. It was not easy. I leaned into the people who were encouraging me to keep going when I felt hopeless. Overall, I knew this was something I wanted SO BADLY: I was passionate, excited, and thriving in a way I never had before in a job. It was something I loved so much that I would have done it for free (if I didn’t need to pay for rent and groceries, of course!).
Thoughts After A Year of Business
I now have a consistently full workload, learning and growing every single day to be the best VA I can be for my clients! I celebrated one year of business a couple months ago, and I am so grateful for the dream I get to live. It’s a joy to celebrate wins with photographers, help them on the hard days, and hype them up in everything they do!
